Geography Online: Internet Student Activities
The changes have been added to the list of links for the book,
so you can just go to that page and link directly to the
new or modified sites when you use the book.
Activity 1: Landforms and Bodies of Water

Activity 3: Make Your Own Weather Map
B3) To find the temperature in a city, students must first click the name of the state and then select "Current Conditions." They'll see a chart with the state's major cities and current temperatures. Young students may need help reading this chart.
Activity 4: Maps: Different Ways to Show the Same Things
The Mapmaker, Mapmaker site is no longer available.
C) The North America in 1650 map has changed. The new URL is http://images.library.uiuc.edu/projects/historical_maps/northamerica/north&east.html. Look at the first map on the page.
Activity 5: Trees: Old, Tall, and Just Plain Huge
A1b) The Coastal Redwood page has changed to http://www.nps.gov/redw/faq.html Have students scroll down to "Redwood Ecology."
A1c) The picture of the person next to the giant sequoia is no longer available, and the second giant sequoia page has changed to http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/expeditions/treasure_fossil/Treasures/Giant_Sequoia/sequoia.html?acts.
Activity 6: Volcanoes
A1) The USGS site is no longer available, but students may find information at http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/vw.html if they can't answer their questions at the Earthforce site.
A2) Have students go to the Volcano World "Volcanoes!" page at http://www.volcanoworld.org/volcanoes.html. They should click on "Earths Volcanoes" and then choose the parts of the world where the volcanoes are located.
C) All Montserrat sites have been changed, and not all of the questions in this section can be answered with the information now available. For images of the volcano, go to http://www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/west.indies/soufriere. For the Montserrat map, go to http://www.geo.mtu.edu/volcanoes/west.indies/soufriere/images/mont_map.jpg.
Activity 8: The World's Biomes

Activity 13: Kids in Japan
A2) Kids Window has changed to http://www.jinjapan.org/kidsweb. Students will need to click "Language Lab." They'll then click Lesson 1 and go to the bottom of the page. Have them copy one of the words or phrases on your worksheet (it might be hard, as they are very small). Then have them click on the word or phrase to hear it. They should proceed to answer the rest of the questions on page 60 of the book.

Activity 14: Life in the City
A2) and A3) The 1990 Census page is no longer available (and is out of date anyway). Instead, have students go to the American FactFinder at http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/BasicFactsServlet. Ask them to follow these directions to find out the populations of their town, New York, and Los Angeles.
In the window that says "Show Me," click on the arrow and select "General Characteristics: Population and Housing."
In the "for" window, select "a City or Town."
Select your state.
Select your city, and click "Go."
